our Story
The Burlington Town Center mall once anchored downtown, but by the mid-2010s it needed major reinvestment. A redevelopment plan—CityPlace Burlington—promised new housing, offices, retail, and restored streets, but after demolition began in 2017, the project collapsed into delays and disputes, leaving behind a massive vacant excavation in the middle of Burlington. Residents began calling it “The Pit,” and it became a highly visible symbol of stalled development and broken trust. “The Pit” grew more infamous as time passed, representing the gap between what had been promised and the reality of an empty hole in the city’s core.
In 2022, CityPlace Partners—a new team of local developers and stakeholders—stepped in to turn things around. They renegotiated agreements, secured financing, rebuilt confidence, and relaunched the effort as Burlington Square.
Their collaboration effectively “saved” the redevelopment, transforming the long-stalled Pit into a real, rising project that will restore downtown streets, add much-needed housing—including affordable units—and finally deliver the vibrant district Burlington had been waiting for.
